How Ankle Impingement Can Affect Movement Patterns

The ankle is a hinge joint that is responsible for performing plantar- and dorsiflexion in the sagittal plane. Dorsiflexion is considered to be the most important movement in the ankle because it allows for the tibia to move forward, which is crucial for correct body positioning and the efficient production and application of force. Dorsiflexion occurs when you pull your toes/foot upwards towards your knee. Lack of flexibility in the ankle may cause a complete inability to perform a movement (such as the squat) and can create a snowball effect all the way up the posterior chain with the potential to cause a serious injury. Take a look at this case study by Kelly Starrett and his war against ankle impingement to get an idea on what good ankle mobility should look like.
