Getting
enough water every day is important for your overall health because water is
responsible for removing toxins, moisturizing skin, lubricating/cushioning your
joints and maintaining your body’s temperature. Water loss in the body occurs
through urination, bowel movements, sweating and respiration and leads to
dehydration if not replenished throughout the day. Athletes must be aware of their water intake because if they are not properly
hydrated, then their bodies will be unable to perform at its highest level. Dehydrated athletes may experience fatigue, muscle cramps, dizziness or other serious symptoms if they do not replenish water loss.
This article goes into further detail on consuming sports drinks, how much
water an athlete should be drinking, the signs of dehydration and the
importance of preventing hyponatremia (Which is the lack of sodium within the
bloodstream).
