Side-lying open books is an excellent functional exercise that focuses on thoracic rotation.
All rotational sport athletes need adequate thoracic spine mobility in
order to create appropriate separation as they work to transfer force
from the lower extremity to the upper extremity during swings, throws,
kicks, and changes of direction. Athletes that lack thoracic mobility
tend to substitute lumbar extension just to maintain an upright torso
when performing sport specific mov
ements; which eventually leads to low back pain, oblique strains, and hip issues.
